Coach Spotlight: Coach Wilson

Hi Wilson, thank you for being a part of our Meet-the-Coach Series! Today we would like to talk with you to learn more about you personally, your coaching style and what it means to you to be a successful Coach.
Firstly, can we ask where you are currently located, and where you grew up?
I was born in Hong Kong, but grew up in the United Kingdom. I now spend half my year in Hong Kong and the other half in Toronto, Canada.
Can you share with us a special memory of your childhood:
I have a deep memory of transiting from a local Hong Kong environment to suddenly a local English environment at the age of 7, when I did not understand a single word of English. But I was lucky enough to have a teacher who’s care for me as a little child I can still remember today- thank you Mrs Gibson! (“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”, Maya Angelou)
What do you do in your spare time?
Due to my English upbringing, I have 2 main sporting passions: the sport of squash which I have played competitively and now socially, and also football where I am a passionate supporter of Liverpool football club!
What is your professional background and which Coaching Accreditations do you hold?
I have over 25 years of professional experience, including 20 years with Shell (the global energy corporation), and assignments in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, China, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. I have led teams from sales & operations, brand & marketing, business development and strategy; and made my transition to coaching over seven years ago by combining my passion for talent development with my professional and diverse background.
I am proud to say I hold six accreditations:
- Professional Certified Coach (ICF: International Coaching Federation)
- Genos Emotional Intelligence Certified Practitioner (Genos International)
- Harrison Debriefing and Coaching Accreditation (Harrison Assessment International)
- Certified Team Coach (Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership)
- Certified Advanced Organizational Coach (Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership)
- Employee Development Accreditation (Harrison’s Assessments International)
Can you explain your coaching style to us?
My coaching principles centres around partnering with leaders to be grounded in self-awareness and awareness of others’ perceptions. In addition, as a thinking and emotional partner help to explore self-potential by stretching personal comfort zones, as well as helping leaders clarify longer-term personal and career goals based on deep exploration and alignment of their personal values.
Have you had any coaching engagements that meant a lot to you personally?
All my coaching engagements have been meaningful as I love the partnering process to help executives and leaders clarify longer term desires and goals, so that they are fully motivated to adopt new actions and behaviours. It has been particularly meaningful to leverage the benefits of coaching for NGO’s and support them in their community work. I recently lead a coaching programme for Red Cross and help them in their quest “for a world in which people respect and protect human life and dignity, and where people are ready to offer impartial and voluntary aid to help improve the lives of vulnerable people.”
What has been the biggest challenge of your coaching career?
The biggest challenge has been unlearning some of the habits that one develops through a corporate career. However, at the same time tap into the over 25 years of commercial experience to partner with clients through a self-exploratory process that leverages their own experience and skills to help enable their personal growth.
What is the most satisfying part of your work?
Helping clients align their “doing” with their “being”, and observing them gain clarity for themselves through the engagement process.
